**DALLAS** – Just months after a tumultuous series of trades left him searching for a fit, Mikko Rantanen has emerged as the undisputed star of the Dallas Stars’ playoff run. The Finnish forward, acquired by Dallas before the trade deadline, is leading all NHL scorers with 19 points in 11 games, silencing early doubts about his $96 million contract and ability to excel outside of Colorado.
Rantanen’s journey began with a surprising trade from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes in January. After a brief and unfulfilling stint in Carolina, he was dealt again to Dallas, where he signed an eight-year extension. His initial performance with the Stars was underwhelming, raising questions about his value to the team.
However, since Game 5 against his former team, the Avalanche, Rantanen has been unstoppable. Coach Pete DeBoer credits Rantanen’s comfort level within the team as a key factor in his resurgence, particularly his integration into the “Finnish Mafia” line alongside fellow countrymen Roope Hintz, Mikael Granlund, Miro Heiskanen and Esa Lindell.
“When you think about his journey this year, he’s been through a lot,” DeBoer said. “There’s been a lot written about him. There’s been a lot said about him. There’s been a lot of doubters out there.”
The newly formed Finnish line has unlocked Rantanen’s potential, and the Stars are now one win away from reaching their third consecutive Western Conference Final. Rantanen’s record-setting performance includes being the first player in NHL history with five three-point games through a team’s first 10 playoff games, and scoring or assisting on a staggering 13 consecutive goals for Dallas.
“I’m trying to stay in the moment,” Rantanen said. “I’m happy to help the team and try to keep doing that as much as I can, both ends of the ice, but even keel after wins and good games.”
With his sights set on the Conn Smythe Trophy and a Stanley Cup title, Rantanen is proving his worth to the Stars and silencing any lingering doubts about his elite status in the NHL.
