Sun May 18 10:03:14 UTC 2025: **AI Creates ‘Synthetic Memories’ to Reclaim Lost Personal Histories**
**Barcelona, Spain** – A design studio in Barcelona is using artificial intelligence to reconstruct personal memories that have been lost due to missing photos, trauma, or historical suppression. Domestic Data Streamers (DDS) has launched the “Synthetic Memories” project, employing AI image-generating systems to create visual representations of recalled experiences.
The initiative aims to help individuals and communities connect with their past and reclaim stories that might otherwise be forgotten. Pau Aleikum Garcia, cofounder of DDS, was inspired by a Syrian refugee grandmother’s concern that her grandchildren would lose their sense of identity due to lost family photo albums.
The process involves in-depth interviews where individuals recount specific memories. A trained “prompter” then uses precise language to guide the AI in generating an image based on the interviewee’s descriptions. The resulting images are intentionally dreamlike and imperfect, reflecting the fragile nature of memory.
One participant, Carmen, was able to see an image of her father held in prison under Franco’s regime which her son decades later recognized. Another example, Jose Carles Vallejo Calderon, a former political prisoner, recreated a clandestine meeting of anti-Franco activists, an event for which no records exist. He found the process therapeutic, helping him to fill the voids created by selective amnesia from his traumatic experiences.
While the project has garnered positive feedback, some experts caution against the potential for AI to reinforce biases and create revisionist histories. DDS emphasizes that the focus is on individual, subjective memories rather than historical reconstruction.
The project is expanding, with plans for “emergency” memory clinics in areas facing cultural heritage loss. The team is also exploring applications in reminiscence therapy for dementia patients and is providing the technology to nursing homes.
