In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Scarlett Johansson opened up about the challenges she faced navigating her career after the breakout success of Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation.” The actress, who was 17 at the time of filming, revealed that she was subsequently typecast in roles that emphasized her sexuality, making it difficult to break free from the “girlfriend,” “the other woman,” and “sex object” stereotypes.
“After ‘Lost in Translation,’ every role that I was offered for years was ‘the girlfriend,’ ‘the other woman,’ a sex object — I couldn’t get out of the cycle,” Johansson stated.
She also touched upon her experience working with Bill Murray on the film, hinting at his difficult state of mind during production. “Bill was in a hard place,” Johansson said, adding that everyone on set was cautious around him. She acknowledged Murray’s recent controversy surrounding his behavior on the set of “Being Mortal,” stating, “Certainly, yes — that was really bad.” However, she also expressed a more forgiving sentiment, adding, “How wonderful that people can change.”
Despite the challenges, Johansson emphasized her pride in how she handled herself during that period of her career, focusing on doing her work. She credited that approach for helping her persevere.
