**’Love, Death + Robots’ Returns to Netflix with Diverse Season, Features Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bruce Sterling Adaptation**
**Los Angeles, CA – May 21, 2024** – Netflix’s acclaimed animated anthology series, “Love, Death + Robots,” is back for its fourth season, promising a diverse mix of science fiction, animation styles, and genres. Created by Tim Miller (Deadpool) and co-founder of Blur Studio, the new season boasts an episode directed by David Fincher featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers in CGI puppet form, alongside a predominantly live-action installment.
A standout episode, “Spider Rose,” adapts a short story by sci-fi author Bruce Sterling from his “Schismatrix Plus” collection. Set in Sterling’s Shaper/Mechanist universe, the episode follows Spider Rose, a Mechanist seeking revenge on the Shapers who killed her husband. Her path intertwines with alien traders known as Investors and their adorable, yet strange, pet Nosey, setting in motion a chain of events that leads to a dark and twisted outcome.
Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson revealed that the ending of “Spider Rose” deviates from the original short story to create a more palatable experience for viewers. In Sterling’s version, Spider Rose consumes Nosey. Nelson explained that modern audiences’ sensitivity towards cute creatures made this ending too disturbing for the animated adaptation, leading to a reversal where Nosey consumes Spider Rose, resulting in Nosey inheriting some of Spider Rose’s features, offering a sliver of hope amid the darkness.
Miller initially preferred the original ending, but acknowledged that Nelson’s vision ultimately improved the episode.
The season has already sparked debate among the creators, particularly regarding the Investors’ motives. Nelson believes the Investors intentionally used Nosey to acquire a valuable gem from Spider Rose without payment, while Miller argues the Investors honor their deals, albeit with unforeseen consequences.
“Love, Death + Robots” Volume 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
