**Duke Energy Program Aims to Lower Energy Bills for West Terre Haute Residents**
**WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) —** Duke Energy is reaching out to residents in West Terre Haute with an assistance program designed to help lower energy bills for those struggling with high costs. Targeting low-income households with high energy usage, the program offers a range of energy-saving measures, from simple fixes to more comprehensive upgrades.
“We identify areas with high energy consumption and offer a variety of solutions,” explained Duke Energy Program Manager Andy Downey. The program is divided into two tiers. The first, “1.0 measures,” includes items like door sweeps, weather stripping kits, and a year’s supply of furnace filters – up to 16 different measures.
Residents deemed high energy users may qualify for “2.0 measures.” This involves a dedicated crew coming in to provide attic insulation, air sealing, duct sealing, and potentially installing smart thermostats, tailored to the specific needs of the home.
The West Vigo Community Center is playing a key role in connecting residents with the program. Community Center President David Elkins, a well-known figure in West Terre Haute, is working alongside Duke Energy to build trust and encourage participation.
“I go out with them and talk with the residents because they know my face,” Elkins said. “It’s easier for them to open the door and talk when they see a familiar face.”
Elkins and the Community Center have set an ambitious goal. “I’m trying to get 80% of the community involved,” he said. “That’s the community center’s goal, to help both Duke and our community.”
