**DHS Reviewing Reality TV Pitch Where Immigrants Compete for Citizenship**
WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently reviewing a controversial pitch for a reality television show that would see immigrants competing for the opportunity to become American citizens.
According to a DHS spokesperson, the proposal is “in the very beginning stages of that vetting process and has not received approval or denial by staff.” Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary, emphasized that the department receives hundreds of television pitches annually, all of which undergo thorough review.
The show, tentatively titled “The American,” is the brainchild of producer Rob Worsoff, whose credits include “The Millionaire Matchmaker” and “Duck Dynasty.” Worsoff, a Canadian immigrant himself, describes the show as a “positive love letter to America,” and he has been pitching the concept since the Obama Administration. He claims to have had multiple positive conversations with the current DHS.
The proposed format would feature a diverse group of contestants participating in challenges testing their knowledge of American heritage and culture, culminating in a town hall-style vote where viewers would weigh in on who they believe deserves to become a citizen. Worsoff envisions location-specific challenges in each episode to showcase different aspects of American life, with challenges such as gold rush and pizza challenges.
Worsoff likens the concept to “The Biggest Loser,” but insists “there’s nobody who loses on this show,” arguing that all contestants are “good candidates” for citizenship. He believes the show would humanize the immigration process and provide opportunities for contestants, even those who don’t “win.”
However, the concept has already drawn criticism, with some arguing that it could be seen as exploitative and demeaning. Worsoff has dismissed these concerns, stating, “I am offering somebody the opportunity to jump to the front of the line and nobody else loses.”
While earlier reports suggested Secretary Kristi Noem had “backed” the project, McLaughlin denied the claims, stating Noem has not reviewed the pitch.
The DHS has yet to make a decision on the show’s fate.
