**Biden’s Memory Questioned in Newly Released Audio of Special Counsel Interview**
Washington D.C. – Audio recordings of former President Joe Biden’s October 2023 interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur have been released, revealing instances where Biden appeared to struggle with his memory and recall details of significant events.
The audio, obtained by Axios, captures Biden, then 80 years old, experiencing difficulty recalling dates, names, and the sequence of events, including the timeline surrounding his son Beau Biden’s death. During the interview, part of the investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents after leaving the vice presidency, the former president repeatedly paused, lost his train of thought, and sought assistance in determining the years of certain events.
At one point, when asked about the location where he stored documents related to his post-vice presidency work, Biden responded with hesitation and repetition, stating, “Well, um, I, I, I, I, I, I don’t know.” He also questioned the timing of his son Beau’s death, asking, “What month did Beau die? Oh god, May 30…” and needing confirmation from his legal team on the year.
The Biden administration had initially resisted releasing the audio recordings, citing their status as “law enforcement materials.” The interviews were part of Hur’s investigation into Biden’s retention of classified documents from his time as Vice President and Senator, which was ordered by Attorney General Merrick Garland. The report was released earlier this year, choosing not to indict Biden in part because of concerns about memory.
