**Banda, Uttar Pradesh -** A severe heatwave is gripping Uttar Pradesh, with Banda district recording the highest temperature in the country on Friday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the mercury soared to a scorching 46.2 degrees Celsius in Banda, prompting a heatwave alert for numerous districts across the state.
IMD scientist Atul Kumar Singh confirmed that Banda registered the highest daytime temperature nationwide. “Banda district in Uttar Pradesh recorded a temperature of 46.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, which was the highest daytime temperature in the entire country. Severe heatwave conditions were recorded in Banda,” he stated. He added that similar conditions prevailed in over a dozen districts, particularly in eastern Uttar Pradesh, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many areas.
Other cities also experienced extreme heat, with Jhansi hitting 45 degrees Celsius at 2:30 PM, followed by Fursatganj and Varanasi (44 degrees), Sultanpur (43.8 degrees), and Agra (42.8 degrees). Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has issued a severe heatwave warning for Saturday, forecasting sweltering conditions in Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Kannauj, Kanpur, Aligarh, Mathura, Hathras, Etah, Agra, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jhansi, and Lalitpur.
The state government has instructed district administrations to be on high alert. The health department has been directed to make special preparations for the treatment of heatstroke-related illnesses and to raise public awareness. Directives have also been issued to ensure the availability of water and shade at schools, hospitals, and public places.
Nighttime temperatures are also running higher than normal across the state, with Lucknow recording a minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius.
The IMD predicts that the heatwave will continue to plague western Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. However, there is a possibility of light rainfall in some areas of eastern UP, offering potential relief.
