**Marva Johnson Named 13th President of Florida A&M University Amidst Controversy**

**Tallahassee, FL – May 17, 2024** – Following a contentious search process, the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Board of Trustees selected Marva Johnson, a current executive at Charter Communications, as the university’s 13th president on May 16. The decision comes after former president Larry Robinson stepped down last year in the aftermath of a major gift mishandling, which led to interim President Timothy Beard stepping in to serve in the role since August. The appointment marks Johnson as the second woman to lead the historically Black college, following Elmira Mangum’s tenure from 2014 to 2016.

Johnson’s candidacy faced significant opposition from students, alumni, and community members who expressed concerns over her lack of academic experience and perceived political ties to right-wing political figures, stemming from her previous roles as a political appointee under Governors Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis. Critics worried that these affiliations could jeopardize the university’s future.

Despite the criticism, Johnson expressed optimism and a desire to elevate FAMU’s standing. “I was not sent here to dismantle FAMU,” she stated during a public forum. “I would love the opportunity to work with you and to grow FAMU.”

Johnson emerged as the board’s pick over fellow finalists Rondall Allen of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Gerald Hector of the University of Central Florida, and FAMU’s own Donald Palm.

The Board of Trustees also approved a salary range of $450,000 to $750,000 for the position. Johnson requested the higher end of this range in her application.

The appointment is pending an interview and confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors.
