Wed May 14 15:33:19 UTC 2025: **Headline: Russian Election Monitor Sentenced to Five Years Amid Crackdown on Critics**

**Moscow, May 14, 2025** – Grigory Melkonyants, co-chair of Russia’s leading independent election monitoring group Golos, was sentenced to five years in a general regime prison colony today. The conviction is part of an escalating crackdown by the Kremlin on independent voices and political opposition.

Melkonyants, 44, was found guilty of collaborating with the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations, an organization deemed “undesirable” and outlawed in Russia. Prosecutors accused him of working with the group.

Arrested in August 2023, Melkonyants maintained his innocence throughout the trial, denouncing the charges as baseless. His lawyer, Mikhail Biryukov, echoed these sentiments, stating that the authorities aimed to intimidate independent observers to deter them from monitoring future elections. Melkonyants also described the harsh conditions he faced in jail, including multiple cell changes and over 100 different cellmates.

Golos, known for recording alleged fraud in Russian elections, had previously been labeled a “foreign agent” before disbanding and reforming. The organization’s online interactive map tracks reports of election violations across Russia.

Independent observers have consistently criticized Russian elections as neither free nor fair. Last year, President Vladimir Putin secured re-election with 87% of the vote in a contest where genuine opposition candidates were barred from participating. Widespread reports of ballot stuffing and voter coercion have plagued Russian elections for years.
