Wed May 14 15:02:43 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Electricity Consumption Surges as Summer Heat Returns
**Thiruvananthapuram, May 14, 2025** – After a brief respite thanks to summer rainfall, electricity consumption in Kerala is once again on the rise, exceeding 100 million units (mu) per day for the first time this month. According to load despatch centre data, consumption reached 100.40 mu on May 12th and 101.21 mu on May 13th.
This surge is attributed to the increasing use of air conditioners as summer heat intensifies following a period of cooler weather brought on by steady rainfall in March and April.
While the current consumption levels are lower than the record highs of the 2024 summer season (115.94 mu daily consumption and 5,797 MW peak demand), they mark a significant increase from earlier in the year. The highest daily consumption recorded in March 2025 was 103.17 mu, and in April, 102.88 mu. Pre-summer assessments by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had anticipated that consumption would surpass the 2024 figures.
The recent rainfall data indicates that summer rainfall since March has decreased to “normal” levels, a significant drop from the “large excess” recorded in early April.
As of today, the storage in KSEB-managed hydel reservoirs stands at 32%, a figure consistent with previous years.
