**NEW DELHI, May 13, 2025** – Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will be sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14th, following the retirement of CJI Sanjiv Khanna. Justice Gavai’s appointment marks a historic moment, as he will become only the second Dalit to hold the position, succeeding Justice KG Balakrishnan who served from 2007 to 2010.
Elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019, Justice Gavai’s tenure as CJI is expected to be relatively short, lasting approximately six months until November 24th. His background, including his origins in Amravati, Maharashtra, and the influence of B.R. Ambedkar on his life and career, are currently being highlighted in the media.
