Mon May 12 03:21:17 UTC 2025: ## Mexico Sues Google Over “Gulf of America” Label
**Mexico City, May 12, 2025** – Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google over its labeling of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” a name change championed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the lawsuit Friday, stating that Google had been sued but offering no further details.
The dispute stems from a controversial executive order by Trump, which attempted to rename the body of water. While the order only holds sway within the United States, Mexico, along with other nations and international organizations, refused to recognize the name change. Mexico maintains that “Gulf of America” should only apply to the U.S. portion of the gulf.
Prior to the lawsuit, Mexico’s Foreign Relations ministry sent letters to Google urging them to retain the traditional name, “Gulf of Mexico.” Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy, Cris Turner, responded in February, stating that the company’s policy of using “Gulf of America” within the U.S. and “Gulf of Mexico” elsewhere was based on “longstanding maps policies impartially and consistently across all regions.” Currently, Google Maps reflects this dual naming convention.
This legal action comes amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Mexico concerning the Gulf’s designation, and highlights the broader issue of the power of tech giants in shaping global narratives. The case also underscores the Trump administration’s legacy of contentious actions, including a previous attempt to restrict access for the Associated Press, which was ultimately overruled by a federal judge on First Amendment grounds. Google has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
