**India Faces Record Internal Displacement in 2024 Due to Climate Disasters**
**NEW DELHI, May 13, 2025** – India recorded a staggering 5.4 million internal displacements in 2024, the highest in 12 years, primarily driven by floods, storms, and other climate-related disasters, according to a report released today by the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).
The report highlights the devastating impact of increasingly extreme weather events across the country. Assam bore the brunt of the crisis, witnessing 2.5 million displacements due to the most intense floods in over a decade. Storms, including Cyclone Dana and Cyclone Remal, triggered another 1.6 million displacements, with Dana alone forcing over a million people to flee in Odisha and West Bengal.
Pre-emptive evacuations, prompted by timely alerts from the India Meteorological Department, mitigated potential loss of life as state authorities established shelters and coordinated the movement of hundreds of thousands. However, the scale of the displacements underscores the urgent need for enhanced disaster preparedness and resilience.
In addition to flooding, Tripura experienced its worst monsoon in over 40 years, leading to widespread landslides and 315,000 displacements.
The IDMC report points to climate change, deforestation, erosion, and inadequate infrastructure maintenance as key factors exacerbating the risk of displacement. While displacements due to violence decreased compared to 2023, with approximately 1,700 movements recorded, the overwhelming majority of displacements were triggered by climate-related hazards.
This record number of displacements underscores the vulnerability of India’s population to climate change and the critical need for comprehensive strategies to reduce displacement risks and build resilience in affected communities.
