Tue May 13 04:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Yankees’ Volpe’s Risky Base Running Costs Team in Loss to Athletics

**SACRAMENTO, CA** – Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe’s questionable baserunning decision proved costly in the Yankees’ 11-7 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday. In the second inning, with two runners on and two outs, Volpe tagged up on a fly ball and attempted to advance to third. Despite the A’s left fielder, Tyler Soderstrom, possessing a weak throwing arm, Volpe was thrown out at third, ending the inning and squashing a potential scoring opportunity.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the risk involved in the play, noting that while it’s generally unwise to be thrown out at third with two outs, Volpe’s decision was made with the consideration of advancing another runner into scoring position. However, Boone ultimately characterized the play as a mistake.

Volpe’s struggles extended beyond the basepaths. He committed an error on a ground ball that should have been a double play, although a replay overturned a questionable out call at second. This error, one of four in his last eight games, contributed to a recent dip in his fielding percentage.

Despite the defensive miscues, Volpe’s offensive performance has shown improvement recently, batting .274 with a home run and six RBIs in his last 17 games. His overall batting average has risen from .197 to .230 since April 20th.
