**PARIS** – Acclaimed French actor Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021. A Paris court handed down an 18-month suspended prison sentence. The 76-year-old actor was convicted of groping a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters”).
The verdict is being seen as a significant post-#MeToo judgment, testing how French society and its film industry respond to sexual misconduct allegations against prominent figures. Depardieu, who denied the accusations and did not attend the hearing, has had a long and illustrious career spanning over 250 films. He was Oscar-nominated in 1991.
While the prosecutor’s request for an 18-month suspended sentence and a €20,000 fine was granted, the case represents only one of several allegations of misconduct against Depardieu, with more than 20 women having made public accusations or formal complaints. Other cases were dismissed due to lack of evidence or expired statutes of limitations. The actor’s long and successful career, marked by versatility and a commanding presence, has been overshadowed by this conviction.
