THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 13, 2025 – The Indian National Congress is undertaking a major restructuring of its Kerala unit in preparation for upcoming local body elections in 2025 and the Assembly elections in 2026. A high-level meeting in New Delhi on May 13th, chaired by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, brought together top Kerala Congress leaders to strategize this overhaul.
The party aims to improve its electoral standing by revamping its organizational structure from the District Congress Committee (DCC) level upwards. This includes potential replacements and additions to its 32 general secretaries, a focus on younger leaders, and a deliberate effort to create a more diverse leadership reflective of Kerala’s social and religious demographics.
Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, stated the goal is to complete the reorganization by August, ahead of the local body polls. The Congress is reportedly concerned about the rise of identity politics and its potential to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the expense of the United Democratic Front (UDF). The party’s strategy emphasizes “social engineering at the grassroots level” to unify diverse groups under the UDF banner. This includes a push for increased voter registration and a renewed door-to-door campaign. The party hopes this restructuring will create a more accessible and responsive party image at the local level.
