Tue May 13 08:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Three Terrorists Killed in Shopian Encounter, Operation Ongoing
**Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, May 13, 2025** – Three terrorists were killed in a gun battle with Indian security forces in Shopian district today, following an intelligence-led operation that began in nearby Kulgam. The encounter, which lasted approximately two hours, involved troops from the Army and paramilitary forces. The Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles unit launched a “search and destroy” operation following intelligence reports of terrorist presence in the Shoekal Keller area. Security forces confirmed the elimination of three “hardcore” terrorists, but the operation is ongoing, with the possibility of another terrorist remaining in the area.
The encounter comes on the heels of Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory action following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. Following the Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, outlining a new approach to counter-terrorism, emphasizing decisive action against terrorist organizations and their sponsors, regardless of nuclear threats. This includes preemptive strikes against terrorist infrastructure and a rejection of any distinction between state sponsors of terrorism and the terrorists themselves. India recently conducted airstrikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, actions that were met with retaliatory attacks from Pakistan. A ceasefire was declared on May 10th, but Indian forces remain vigilant.
