Mon May 12 07:48:19 UTC 2025: ## Kohli Follows Sharma into Test Cricket Retirement

**Mumbai, India –** Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a remarkable 14-year career in the format. The announcement comes just days after captain Rohit Sharma also stepped away from Test matches.

Kohli, 36, made his Test debut in 2011 and amassed 9,230 runs across 123 matches, including an impressive 30 centuries, at an average of 46.85. He will continue to play One Day Internationals (ODIs). His retirement from Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) followed India’s World Cup win last year.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kohli reflected on his career, highlighting the personal challenges and rewarding experiences of Test cricket. While his final Test series ended in a 3-1 defeat to Australia in January, costing India the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his legacy extends far beyond individual results.

Kohli’s captaincy from 2014 to 2022 was particularly noteworthy. He led India to 40 Test victories, making him the nation’s most successful Test captain ever. He guided the team to the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021 and the final in 2023.

Kohli’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian Test cricket, leaving a void in the team’s batting line-up. His contributions to the game, both as a player and captain, have cemented his place among the all-time greats. India’s next Test series is a five-match tour of England beginning in June.
