Mon May 12 10:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Ukraine Arrests Two on Charges of Spying for Hungarian Military Intelligence

**KYIV** – Ukrainian security services (SBU) announced the arrest of two Ukrainian nationals accused of spying for Hungarian military intelligence near the Ukrainian-Hungarian border. The suspects, a man and a woman, both former members of the Ukrainian army, allegedly gathered intelligence on troop numbers, military bases, weapons, and aircraft in Zakarpattia, western Ukraine. According to SBU spokesperson Artem Dehtiarenko, the agents also investigated the local population’s potential reaction to a Hungarian military incursion and sought vulnerabilities in the region’s land and air defenses. A video confession from the suspects was released as evidence. The SBU claims a Hungarian military intelligence officer acted as their handler.

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó dismissed the allegations as Ukrainian propaganda, pending official confirmation. If convicted of high treason during wartime, the suspects face life imprisonment. The arrests further strain already tense relations between Ukraine and Hungary, particularly given Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s close ties to Russia. The news follows separate reports of a stalled American-Ukrainian investment fund and disruptions at Russian airports.
