Mon May 12 11:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Tesla’s Surprise Price Cut: 2025 Model Y Undercuts Previous Generation

**DETROIT, MI –** Tesla has launched the 2025 Model Y, surprising the market with a price point lower than its predecessor in some cases. The new base model, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, starts at $44,990, dropping to $37,490 after the federal EV tax credit and potentially even lower with state incentives. This marks a significant departure from the usual trend of increasing vehicle prices.

The 2025 Model Y offers two trims in the US: the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and the Long Range All-Wheel Drive, priced at $48,990 before the federal tax credit. The Performance trim has been dropped. The RWD model boasts an EPA-estimated 357 miles of range, exceeding many base model EVs, though its 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds is slower than the AWD model’s 4.6 seconds.

This aggressive pricing strategy comes amidst challenges for Tesla. The company’s stock has plummeted 41.5% in the first quarter of 2024, and sales are down in several key European markets, potentially linked to growing negative sentiment towards CEO Elon Musk. Despite these headwinds, Tesla highlights the Model Y’s high US manufacturing content, suggesting it’s better positioned to withstand potential tariffs.

While the Model Y remains a sales leader in the small electric SUV segment, it faces stiff competition. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 offer strong alternatives, catering to different preferences, along with the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the latter touted as the best value option currently available. Despite Tesla’s struggles, the lower-priced Model Y ensures it remains a powerful contender in a rapidly growing market.
