**NEW DELHI** – India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has become the target of a significant online hate campaign following his statement on recent Pakistan ceasefire violations. The veteran diplomat, who assumed his current role in 2024, issued a statement Saturday night detailing Pakistan’s breach of a newly agreed ceasefire and India’s measured response. While affirming India’s commitment to the deal, Misri’s statement was met with criticism from some online users who felt he should have adopted a stronger stance.
The online attacks extended to Misri’s daughter, Didon, who works at a London-based law firm. False accusations linking her work to direct support for Rohingya refugees circulated online. Sources clarified that Didon’s work focuses on investment treaty and international commercial arbitration, and that a brief internship with the UNHCR during law school involved general research, including on humanitarian issues.
The social media storm prompted Misri to lock his X account. However, he has received significant support from prominent figures. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi defended Misri, emphasizing that civil servants should not be held responsible for government decisions. Former Foreign Secretary Nirupama Menon Rao also condemned the attacks, describing the targeting of Misri and his family as “utterly shameful” and urging an end to the “toxic hate.”
Misri, a 1989 Foreign Service recruit, has served India in key roles, including as Ambassador to China and Deputy National Security Adviser. His supporters are calling for an end to the online abuse and a show of solidarity with India’s diplomats.
