Mon May 12 05:25:40 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s Bus Stop Blues: Commuters Face Challenges Amidst Rising Ridership

**Bengaluru, May 12, 2025** – The rising popularity of Bengaluru’s public bus system, fueled by the Shakti scheme offering free travel for women, is overshadowed by widespread concerns over the inadequate state of bus stops across the city. Commuters are facing difficulties due to broken shelters, overflowing trash, inconsistent bus stops, and poorly marked locations.

Students and working professionals alike report significant challenges. Ananya, a college student, describes the Vasanth Nagar bus stop, situated next to an open drain, as unusable due to the smell and unsanitary conditions. Rajarshi, a 14-year-old, highlights the inconsistent stops and trash surrounding his local bus stop in Puttenahalli, while Preeti Mishra, a yoga instructor, notes the difficulty in identifying bus stops in areas like Old Town and Santhe Circle due to a lack of clear infrastructure. The problem is exacerbated by multiple bus stops sharing the same name, causing confusion for first-time users, according to Rajarshi.

While south Bengaluru reportedly has better-maintained bus stops, areas like Whitefield, undergoing rapid development and metro construction, are lagging behind in providing adequate bus infrastructure for commuters.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), responsible for approximately 8,500 bus shelters, claims it isn’t directly responsible for maintenance or construction, delegating these tasks to three separate agencies. A BBMP official stated that new bus stops are only built upon formal requests and that areas under metro construction may face delays in improvements. The situation highlights a significant gap between the increasing demand for public transport and the provision of adequate facilities for Bengaluru’s commuters.
