Sun May 11 17:40:12 UTC 2025: ## Over 100 Dead, Hundreds Homeless After Devastating Floods in DR Congo

**Bukavu, DR Congo – May 11, 2025** – Torrential rains triggered catastrophic floods in Kasaba village, Sud Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving over 100 people dead and causing widespread destruction. The Kasaba river overflowed its banks overnight Thursday-Friday, sweeping away homes and claiming the lives of mostly children and elderly residents.

Local officials reported at least 104 fatalities, with one source citing as many as 119 bodies recovered. At least 28 people were injured and approximately 150 homes were destroyed. The village’s remote location on Lake Tanganyika, accessible only by water and lacking internet service, hampered initial response efforts.

Regional administrator Sammy Kalonji described the damage as “enormous,” highlighting the significant loss of life and property. The floods, a result of torrential rains and exacerbated by deforestation in the surrounding hills, are the latest in a series of devastating natural disasters to plague the region. Similar flooding in 2023 claimed 400 lives along the shores of Lake Kivu in the same province. The ongoing threat of such events underscores the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the area.
