Sun May 11 18:29:48 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Traffic Police Install Canopies at Some, But Not All, Busy Junctions
**Chennai, India (May 12, 2025)** – The Greater Chennai Traffic Police have begun installing canopies at several traffic junctions across the city, mirroring a similar initiative in Puducherry. While welcomed by residents as a respite from the intense summer heat, the program’s incomplete rollout is causing frustration for motorists at several heavily trafficked intersections.
Canopies are notably absent at key junctions including Sterling Road, Thirumangalam Road, Teynampet, and Spencer Junction, leaving drivers exposed to the elements. A senior traffic police officer stated that the current installations are part of a pilot program, with further deployment contingent on public feedback. The officer also suggested the possibility of permanent canopies at some locations to provide protection during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, commuters using the Sanatorium suburban train station are facing separate infrastructural challenges. Slow progress on elevator installation is causing significant inconvenience for senior citizens and women, while broken footpath tiles and steps on the footbridge add to the difficulties. Residents of areas including Chitlapakkam, Tambaram MEPZ, and Sembakkam rely heavily on this station.
