Mon May 12 11:53:29 UTC 2025: ## Former Indian Army Chief Advocates for Diplomacy After India-Pakistan Clashes

**Pune, India (May 12, 2025)** – Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane has defended the recent suspension of hostilities with Pakistan, emphasizing the high cost of war and the importance of diplomacy. Following “Operation Sindoor,” a series of Indian military strikes on Pakistani terrorist camps and infrastructure, which culminated in four days of intense fighting, a cessation of military operations was announced.

General Naravane, speaking at an event in Pune, stated that while he would obey orders to go to war, diplomacy should always be the preferred approach. He argued that the recent actions demonstrated to Pakistan the high cost of continued conflict, prompting them to seek a dialogue. He stressed that the cessation was not a full ceasefire and cautioned against unwarranted optimism.

The General highlighted the devastating human cost of war, including civilian casualties and the long-term psychological trauma experienced by soldiers and civilians alike, referencing PTSD. He dismissed the romanticized view of war often portrayed in popular culture, emphasizing its serious and destructive nature.

General Naravane also underscored the need for a strong defence budget, likening it to an insurance premium. A well-equipped military, he argued, not only ensures national security but also deters potential aggressors. He emphasized that the approximately 15% of the national budget allocated to defence is a necessary investment, preventing potentially far greater costs associated with conflict. He advocated for finding a balance between military spending and other critical areas like education and healthcare. Finally, he stressed the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, not just between nations, but also within societies.
