**VIJAYAWADA, Andhra Pradesh –** Gandhi Hill, a significant landmark in Vijayawada, is slated for a major renovation project, officials announced on Saturday. The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a comprehensive plan to restore the historic site, which houses a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, to its former glory and transform it into an international tourist destination.
The Gandhi Hill Foundation (GHF), recently reconstituted, held a meeting to outline a phased development plan. Phase one (2025-2027) will focus on improving basic amenities, landscaping, and renovating the main entrance arch and children’s play area. The planetarium will be upgraded using German technology by October 2, 2025 (Gandhi Jayanthi), and the mini toy train will be refurbished.
The GHF plans to collaborate with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and local businesses to enhance the site’s aesthetics. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy will serve as the chief patron of the GHF, providing guidance for the project.
Gandhi Hill holds historical significance, as Mahatma Gandhi addressed a gathering there in 1921, promoting Swadeshi and urging donations for the Swaraj Fund. The memorial stupa was unveiled in 1968. This renovation project aims to revitalize this important historical and cultural site.
