**UDHAGAMANDALAM, INDIA – May 12, 2025** – A recent incident involving an elephant damaging property in Nilakottai town, Tamil Nadu, has prompted a collaborative effort between the Forest Department and local residents to reduce human-wildlife conflict. Last week, an elephant entered the town, causing damage to a building and a vehicle, sparking protests and calls for the animal’s relocation. Video footage of the incident circulated widely on social media.
To address the situation and ease tensions, the Gudalur forest division held a grievance redressal meeting. Forest officials explained that the elephant, a long-time resident of the Bitherkad range, had become increasingly drawn to the town due to habitat encroachment and garbage accumulation. The elephant, described as non-aggressive previously, has had its traditional pathways disrupted by human expansion.
Following the meeting, a joint cleanup drive was undertaken, removing nearly a tonne of garbage and invasive plants from an elephant pathway leading into Nilakottai. The Forest Department hopes that improved visibility and the removal of food sources will deter future incursions. Continuous monitoring of the elephant is also underway to provide early warnings to residents. The initiative aims to foster a more harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife in the area.
