**NEW DELHI** – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert, predicting significant changes across the country. Following a period of intense heat stretching from east to west, severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall are expected in various regions.
An orange alert has been issued for Punjab and Haryana, warning of particularly strong weather conditions. The IMD forecasts a heatwave across Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha for the next three to four days. Thunderstorms and lightning are anticipated in northwest India (May 12th) and central India (May 13th). Furthermore, heavy rainfall is predicted for northeast India from May 11th to 15th.
The IMD also provided a monsoon update, anticipating its arrival in the southern Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, and parts of the Bay of Bengal by May 13th. Further progress is expected over the Arabian Sea, Maldives, and more areas of the Bay of Bengal within four to five days.
Several northern states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of Punjab, are expected to experience rain and lightning, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50-60 km/h. Heavy rainfall is also possible in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, and parts of West Bengal.
Pre-monsoon showers are predicted for South India (May 11th-15th), with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana anticipating strong winds and moderate to heavy rainfall.
