Sun May 11 07:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Scorsese’s “Sopranos” Dislike: A Case of Suburb vs. City?

**Los Angeles, CA** – The renowned director Martin Scorsese’s aversion to the critically acclaimed HBO series *The Sopranos* has been revealed by creator David Chase in a new interview. Chase, speaking on *The Hollywood Reporter’s* “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast and in the upcoming documentary *Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos*, stated that Scorsese admitted to not understanding the show, citing its suburban New Jersey setting and the characters’ different family dynamics as reasons.

Scorsese previously expressed his disconnect in a 2019 interview, stating he couldn’t relate to the “New Jersey with big houses” portrayal of the mob. He also questioned the use of profanity in front of children.

Chase, in response, suggested that Scorsese’s perspective was shaped by his own New York upbringing, which differed from the suburban New Jersey environment depicted in *The Sopranos*. He argued that while both settings involved organized crime, the cultural contexts and experiences were distinct. This explanation, however, is somewhat undermined by the fact that Scorsese’s own *Goodfellas* also featured scenes filmed in rural areas outside of New York City.

Despite the apparent difference in opinion, Chase noted a brief encounter with Scorsese but revealed they never discussed the matter. Scorsese was unavailable for comment. The full interview with Chase and documentary director Alex Gibney is available on *The Hollywood Reporter’s* “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast.
