Sun May 11 15:40:00 UTC 2025: ## American Cardinal Elected Pope Leo XIV, Faces Scrutiny Amidst Calls for Unity

VATICAN CITY – In a momentous election, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, becoming the 267th Pope and the first American to hold the office. The announcement from St. Peter’s Basilica was met with resounding cheers of “Viva il Papa!” from the assembled crowds.

While born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, Leo XIV spent many years as a missionary in Peru, earning Peruvian citizenship and deep ties to the Latin American nation. He is described by the Vatican as the second Pope from the Americas, following Pope Francis. Genealogical research further reveals strong connections to New Orleans’ Black community through his maternal grandparents.

Leo XIV’s early life saw him serve as an altar boy before his ordination in 1982. He dedicated years to working with marginalized communities in Peru, serving as a parish pastor and seminary teacher. His prominent role as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, responsible for selecting and supervising bishops, brought him to the attention of cardinals worldwide. He was appointed Archbishop in January 2023 and elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis just months later.

In his first address, the new Pope spoke fondly of his predecessor, Francis, calling for unity and collaboration. His choice of the papal name “Leo” is seen by experts as signifying a commitment to social justice issues, echoing the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, who addressed the challenges of the Industrial Revolution.

While his views on LGBT issues remain somewhat unclear, Leo XIV has shown support for Pope Francis’s blessing of same-sex couples, although with the caveat of local interpretation. He has also been a vocal advocate for environmental action, calling for concrete measures to combat climate change. Notably, he supported Pope Francis’s decision to include women in the Dicastery for Bishops, highlighting their valuable contributions.

However, Leo XIV’s papacy begins under a cloud of scrutiny. Allegations have surfaced concerning his handling of sexual abuse cases during his time as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. Three women have accused him of failing to properly investigate a priest accused of sexual abuse. While church officials deny this and claim an investigation was closed due to lack of evidence, a local prosecutor has reopened the investigation. These allegations, and the ongoing fallout from past sexual abuse scandals, represent a significant challenge for the new Pope.

The new pontiff’s early pronouncements and policies will be closely watched, particularly regarding his approach to continuing Pope Francis’ reforms and addressing the complex social and ethical challenges facing the Catholic Church.
