CHAPEL HILL, NC (May 9, 2025) – The NC State Wolfpack defeated the UNC Tar Heels 8-5 Friday night at Boshamer Stadium, snapping UNC’s five-game winning streak. The Wolfpack scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie and secure the victory.
UNC trailed for most of the game, falling behind 4-0 after NC State’s three-run fifth inning. The Tar Heels rallied in the seventh, with Jackson Van De Brake and Luke Stevenson hitting back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 4-3. UNC tied the game in the eighth, capitalizing on a defensive error by NC State and timely hits from Carter French and Kane Kepley.
However, NC State answered immediately in the ninth. A leadoff batter reaching base, followed by a wild pitch and several hits, pushed across three runs giving them the lead and securing the win. The Wolfpack tallied 14 hits against the Tar Heel pitching staff.
The loss is only the sixth for UNC at home this season. The Tar Heels fall to 37-11 overall and 16-10 in conference play. The two teams will play the deciding game of their weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
