Sat May 10 22:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Europe Pushes 30-Day Ukraine Ceasefire, Testing Putin’s Intentions

**KYIV** – A bold European initiative is forcing Russia into a high-stakes decision: accept, reject, or ignore a 30-day unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine. This unprecedented move, spearheaded by France, the UK, Germany, Poland, and Ukraine, aims to halt the ongoing conflict and pave the way for meaningful negotiations. The proposal, initially suggested by the US and Ukraine, puts pressure on the Kremlin to reveal its true intentions regarding peace.

The proposal presents a significant challenge for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Previous attempts at negotiation have been met with vague responses from Moscow. This time, the Kremlin must clearly indicate its stance, a move that could expose its commitment – or lack thereof – to ending the fighting. A refusal or a cynical manipulation of the ceasefire could trigger “massive sanctions,” as French President Emmanuel Macron warned.

The initiative is not without risk. Ukraine faces a 30-hour window to prepare its frontline forces for a potential month of tense peace, during which they may lose ground if the ceasefire is violated by Russia. Concerns also remain regarding the monitoring of the truce, and the potential for Russian disinformation to undermine the process. The United States’ role in monitoring the ceasefire is still to be defined, although its involvement is crucial to ensure the credibility of the process and its success.

The European gamble carries significant weight. A failure could lead to a further escalation of the war, while a successful ceasefire could finally open the door to meaningful negotiations over Ukraine’s borders. The proposal also seeks to counter the perceived waning patience of the Trump administration, which could otherwise withdraw US aid to Ukraine – a devastating blow to the European effort.

The coming weeks will be critical. Europe aims to demonstrate to the Kremlin its determination to end the war and, at the same time, convince former President Trump of the need to maintain a strong stance against Russia, exceeding even the Biden administration’s efforts. The outcome, however, remains highly uncertain, contingent upon Putin’s response and the ability of the European allies to maintain unity in the face of potential setbacks.
