Sun May 11 06:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Trump Claims ‘Great Progress’ in US-China Tariff Talks as Negotiations Continue

**Geneva, Switzerland** – High-level trade negotiations between the United States and China continued into a second day in Geneva, following President Donald Trump’s announcement of significant progress. While no major breakthrough was publicly announced after over 10 hours of talks on Saturday, Trump declared on Truth Social that “great progress” had been made and that much had been agreed upon.

The talks, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, focused on reducing tariffs imposed by both countries. These tariffs, including a 145% levy on some Chinese goods imposed by the U.S. in April, have been a major point of contention. While China recently reduced tariffs on goods from other countries, they simultaneously raised tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%.

Despite this, Trump has maintained his commitment to a 10% baseline tariff and expressed optimism about reaching a deal. He previously stated that China was eager to resolve the tariff dispute. While specifics of the weekend’s discussions remain scarce, Trump described the negotiations as conducted in a “friendly, but constructive” manner, aiming for an opening of the Chinese market to American businesses.

Secretary Bessent previously warned that Chinese tariffs could cost millions of jobs, arguing that China, with its significantly larger trade surplus with the U.S., should bear the brunt of tariff reductions. The negotiations are expected to continue on Sunday.
