**Chennai, May 11, 2025** – Tamil Nadu has achieved a significant milestone in higher education, surpassing the national target set for 2035, according to Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Addressing graduating students at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Sitharam revealed that Tamil Nadu boasts a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) exceeding 50%, significantly higher than the national average of 29%. He attributed this success to the strong performance of both public and private engineering institutions.
While praising the state’s achievement in degree attainment, Prof. Sitharam stressed the importance of continuous upskilling in the face of rapid technological advancements. He highlighted the need for students to adapt to disruptions driven by AI, cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies, emphasizing the importance of both technical and soft skills.
Further addressing reporters, Prof. Sitharam announced the launch of DX-EDGE (Digital Excellence for Growth and Enterprise) – a joint initiative by NITI Aayog, AICTE, and CII. This program aims to digitally empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), potentially boosting their revenues by 20-30% through AI adoption.
Regarding the ethical implications of AI, Prof. Sitharam argued against rigid regulatory frameworks, suggesting that fostering ethical awareness within educational institutions is a more effective approach. He emphasized the need for students to understand the responsible use and disclosure of AI technologies.
A combined total of 3,420 students graduated from St. Joseph’s College of Engineering and Technology at the ceremony.
