Sun May 11 11:13:27 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Launches Digital Archive to Preserve Endangered Traditional Arts

**Chennai, May 11, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department has announced a major initiative to digitally preserve the state’s rich but endangered traditional performing arts. The project, titled “Suvadugal,” aims to create a comprehensive online archive of thousands of indigenous art forms and oral traditions practiced by Adi Dravidar and tribal communities.

Many of these art forms, including unique musical performances like Singari Melam and Kaniyan Koothu, are facing extinction due to a lack of documentation and institutional support, according to R. Kaleeswaran, founder of the Alternate Media Centre. He highlights the urgent need for preservation, citing examples like Bootha Kabala Aatam, a ritualistic performance practiced by only a handful of artists.

“Suvadugal” will document these traditions through audio-visual recordings, ensuring their survival and transmission to future generations. The initiative comes as a critical response to the rapid socio-economic changes threatening the continuity of these vital cultural expressions.
