**GUWAHATI, May 11, 2025** – India’s Ministry of Railways has approved a ₹2.25 crore survey for a new 75km railway line in Sikkim. The line will connect Melli, on the Sikkim-West Bengal border, to Dentam on the India-Nepal border, significantly improving connectivity to the state’s southern and western regions.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will conduct the survey for this strategically important project, which is an extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway line (expected to open in 2027). Melli will serve as a crucial junction point.
The initiative follows a request from Sikkim’s Lok Sabha member, Indra Hang Subba, and the directive of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The new line aims to bridge an infrastructure gap, connecting remote areas like Dentam to the national railway network. This development is expected to boost economic activity and improve accessibility in the region.
