Sun May 11 07:16:51 UTC 2025: ## Macron Rejects Putin’s Negotiation Offer as Insufficient
**Przemysl, Poland –** French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine as insufficient, stating that an unconditional ceasefire must precede any talks. Macron, speaking to reporters Sunday after a visit to Ukraine with the leaders of Germany, Britain, and Poland, characterized Putin’s offer as a delaying tactic aimed at buying time and avoiding the four-nation call for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting Monday.
The joint statement from the four European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of massive sanctions against Russia should it fail to comply with the ceasefire demand. While Putin proposed negotiations in Istanbul, he did not address the 30-day ceasefire directly.
Macron explained that Putin’s approach is unacceptable to Ukraine, as they cannot negotiate while under constant bombardment. He also expressed doubt about Zelenskyy’s willingness to engage in talks given the failed negotiations in Istanbul shortly after the 2022 invasion. The French president stressed the need for a united Western front, insisting on an unconditional ceasefire as a prerequisite for further discussions.
