Sun May 11 12:10:00 UTC 2025: **Mistrial Declared in Trial of Officer Who Shot Patrick Lyoya**

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A mistrial was declared Thursday in the second-degree murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr, who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya, a Black man, during a traffic stop in April 2022. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

The shooting, captured on body and dashcam footage, sparked widespread protests in Grand Rapids. The video showed Schurr shooting Lyoya in the back of the head while he was on the ground after a struggle involving a Taser. Schurr, who claimed he feared for his life, was fired from the Grand Rapids Police Department following the incident.

Schurr’s defense centered on the struggle with the Taser, arguing he acted in self-defense. The prosecution countered that the Taser had already been deployed twice and that Schurr’s actions were excessive. Lyoya’s driver’s license was revoked, and an arrest warrant was outstanding for a domestic violence charge, although Schurr was unaware of these facts at the time of the stop. An autopsy showed Lyoya’s blood-alcohol content was three times the legal driving limit.

The mistrial comes a day after three former Memphis police officers were acquitted in the Tyre Nichols beating death, highlighting ongoing concerns about police brutality and racial injustice in the United States. While Schurr may face a retrial, the outcome leaves the Lyoya family and the community awaiting further justice. Heavy security was present throughout the trial, which drew significant public attention.
