Sun May 11 08:46:18 UTC 2025: ## Indian Citizenship Granted to Widow of West Bengal Man Killed in Pahalgam Terror Attack
**Kolkata, May 11, 2025** – The Ministry of Home Affairs has granted Indian citizenship to Soheni Roy, the widow of Bitan Adhikari, a West Bengal resident who was killed in the April 22nd Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, who shared Soheni Roy’s citizenship certificate on social media. The certificate confirms her birth in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, and her entry into India in January 1997. Mr. Majumdar stated that Soheni had applied for citizenship after marrying Mr. Adhikari.
Adhikari, an IT employee working in Florida, was killed in the attack while his wife was present. The incident sparked questions regarding Soheni’s nationality among some family members. The granting of citizenship follows the West Bengal government’s provision of compensation to Adhikari’s family, which includes his elderly parents residing in Kolkata’s Patuli. Numerous politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties have visited the family to offer support.
Three West Bengal residents were among the 26 victims of the Pahalgam attack. Besides Adhikari, Sameer Guha from Behala and Manish Ranjan from Purulia also perished in the tragedy.
