Sun May 11 11:00:00 UTC 2025: **Krispy Kreme Pauses Nationwide McDonald’s Doughnut Rollout**
NEW YORK – Krispy Kreme has announced a pause in its planned nationwide rollout of doughnuts in McDonald’s restaurants. The company cited lower-than-expected demand and a need to reassess the partnership with McDonald’s to ensure profitability for both brands. The decision comes after the initial launch in a limited number of Kentucky locations in 2023 and a subsequent expansion to over 2,400 McDonald’s restaurants by March 2025.
Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth stated that while he remains confident in the long-term potential, the companies are working together to improve sales and streamline operations before further expansion. The initial partnership announcement in March 2024 aimed to bring Krispy Kreme doughnuts to all U.S. McDonald’s locations by the end of 2026, a move expected to significantly increase Krispy Kreme’s sales points.
This news follows a broader trend of sluggish sales in the fast-food sector. McDonald’s reported a 3.6% drop in U.S. same-store sales in the first quarter of 2025 – its steepest decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. This downturn mirrors similar struggles reported by other restaurant chains, attributed to inflation and economic uncertainty impacting consumer spending. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the McDonald’s partnership, Krispy Kreme has also withdrawn its full-year financial outlook.
