**Kolkata, India – May 11, 2025** – The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has announced the formation of a 10-member committee to address the rising number of student suicides on campus. The move follows several deaths since January this year, including the recent death of a third-year B.Tech student, Mohammad Asif Qamar, on May 4th and a final year student, Aniket Walker, on April 20th. A further suicide was reported in January.
The committee, comprising psychologists, legal and police professionals, educators, counselors, and alumni, will investigate the underlying factors contributing to the mental health crisis among students, faculty, and staff. The committee aims to assess the current support systems and recommend improvements to bolster the campus’s mental health ecosystem. Their findings and recommendations are expected within three months.
In a significant step, IIT Kharagpur has also filed First Information Reports (FIRs) for each student death, following a Supreme Court inquiry. This proactive measure underscores the institute’s commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively. The institute hopes that the committee’s work will lead to preventative measures to avoid future tragedies.
The institute urges students struggling with mental health issues to seek help through the suicide prevention helpline (DISHA – 0471-2552056, 1056).
