**Puducherry, May 10, 2025** – The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a nationwide survey in Puducherry to assess the unmet needs and access to assistive technologies among the general population. The study, using a digital rATA (Rapid Assistive Technology Assessment) tool, will be conducted in collaboration with the Puducherry Department of Health and Family Welfare Services and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
The survey, a cross-sectional study, will focus on 21 wards within the Oulgaret Municipality. A team led by JIPMER’s J. Venkatachalam will conduct door-to-door data collection, aided by local Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). The ICMR team met with the Director of the Department of Health, V. Ravichandran, on Friday to finalize survey procedures.
The initiative aims to provide crucial data for evidence-based policies to improve access to and availability of assistive technologies, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals in need. Residents of Oulgaret are encouraged to participate in the survey.
