**MUMBAI, INDIA** – LaLiga, the governing body of Spain’s top football league, has terminated its exclusive media rights contract with Galaxy Racer (GXR) in the Indian subcontinent due to months of unpaid fees. This follows a turbulent relationship marked by several disruptions to LaLiga broadcasts in India earlier this year.
The termination opens the door for FanCode, a popular Indian streaming service, to acquire the rights. SportBusiness understands that final contracts are currently being finalized, covering India exclusively. This would add LaLiga to FanCode’s existing portfolio of Spanish football rights, which currently includes the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. Both parties are reportedly aiming to finalize the deal before Sunday’s highly anticipated El Clásico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The proposed deal with FanCode is a five-season agreement, running from 2025-26 to 2029-30. It is understood that Peak Sport Media agency facilitated this new deal.
GXR, a Dubai-based company primarily known for its involvement in esports and gaming, secured the original six-year contract (2024-25 to 2029-30) in 2022. The deal, brokered separately, also included Ligue 1 rights, but those broadcasts were permanently cut off after GXR’s payment failures. While LaLiga briefly returned to GXR’s platform after a service interruption in February, the non-payment issues persisted, ultimately leading to contract termination.
GXR’s acquisition of LaLiga and Ligue 1 rights last year raised eyebrows within the Indian media industry given its lack of broadcasting experience in the market. The company’s other international football deal – Serie A rights – reportedly remain unaffected.
The move reflects a broader trend of declining international football rights values in India. Broadcasters are finding it increasingly difficult to compete for rights outside of major cricket and globally appealing leagues such as the English Premier League. Galaxy Racer has yet to respond to requests for comment.
