Sun May 11 09:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Putin Proposes Direct Russia-Ukraine Talks Amid Threat of New Sanctions

**Kyiv/Berlin** – Facing the prospect of severe new sanctions from European leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15th. This proposal follows a joint visit to Kyiv by the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, and Poland, who threatened “new and massive” sanctions targeting Russia’s banking and energy sectors if Putin refused a 30-day ceasefire.

Putin rejected the ceasefire demand, instead suggesting negotiations “without any preconditions.” He stated that Russia is prepared for “serious negotiations” to address the “root causes of the conflict,” hinting at the possibility of future ceasefires emerging from these talks. However, he did not explicitly commit to halting hostilities before the proposed May 15th meeting.

The Ukrainian government has yet to respond officially. Shortly after Putin’s announcement, several Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, experienced air raid alerts following an attack by Russian exploding drones. The timing of the drone attack cast a shadow over Putin’s call for peace talks. The viability and outcome of the proposed negotiations remain uncertain.
