Sun May 11 00:30:00 UTC 2025: **Danish Leaders Condemn US Spying on Greenland Amid Trump’s Acquisition Attempts**

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Tensions between the United States and Denmark escalated Friday following reports that the U.S. was conducting intelligence gathering on Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen strongly condemned the alleged spying, stating, “You cannot spy against an ally.” Her comments followed a report in The Wall Street Journal that U.S. intelligence agencies, under the direction of National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, were collecting information on Greenland’s independence movement and its views on U.S. resource extraction.

The Danish government summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen for an explanation. While details of the meeting remain undisclosed, Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also publicly criticized the Trump administration’s approach to the issue.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen echoed the condemnation, calling the reported espionage “unacceptable and disrespectful.” He reiterated Greenland’s firm stance that the island is not for sale, dismissing President Trump’s repeated assertions of interest in acquiring the territory.

Trump, who previously suggested purchasing Greenland and even hinted at the possibility of taking it by force, doubled down on his interest during a recent interview. He stated, “I don’t rule it out. I don’t say I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything.” He further emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for international security.

Director Gabbard responded to the Wall Street Journal report by stating she had referred three individuals to the Department of Justice for leaking classified information. She accused the newspaper of aiding in the undermining of the President.

The incident further strains U.S.-Danish relations, particularly concerning cooperation on defense and security in the Arctic region. The Danish government’s firm rejection of the alleged spying and Trump’s repeated attempts to acquire Greenland highlight a significant diplomatic challenge.
