Bengaluru, May 11, 2025 – Byatarayanapura police have arrested a couple for abandoning their newborn daughter in an autorickshaw after discovering she had a cleft lip. The incident occurred on April 24th when residents heard the baby’s cries.
Police used CCTV footage from over 150 cameras to track the parents to Virajapete, Kodagu district. The father, Papanna, a private firm employee, admitted to abandoning the child with his extramarital partner, a widow, because of the baby’s cleft lip. The couple, who traveled to Bengaluru by bus, were apprehended and the baby was reunited with its mother.
Authorities warned the mother to care for the child and are monitoring the situation. Papanna remains in custody pending further investigation. The Child Welfare Committee is also involved in the case.
