Sat May 10 17:36:43 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Corporation Doubles Property Tax Collection in a Year
**Madurai, India (May 10, 2025)** – The Madurai Corporation has announced a significant increase in property tax collection, more than doubling its revenue in April 2025 compared to the same period last year. Officials reported a collection of ₹54.91 crore this April, compared to ₹23.21 crore in April 2024.
This dramatic rise is attributed to a multi-pronged approach including extensive media coverage, door-to-door pamphlet distribution, and a 5% incentive for timely tax payments. The incentive, offered to those paying before April 30th, proved highly effective.
Other revenue streams also saw substantial increases. Water charge collection jumped from ₹1.15 crore in April 2024 to ₹2.58 crore this April, while underground drainage charges rose from ₹1.81 crore to ₹3.94 crore. The corporation collected taxes across all 100 wards through 40 collection centers, even opening additional counters to manage the increased demand at the end of April.
Despite the availability of POS machines for bill collectors and online payment options, the majority of taxpayers preferred in-person payments at collection centers. Officials expressed hope for increased adoption of online methods in the future, citing the higher online payment rates in cities like Chennai and Coimbatore.
