TIRUVANNAMALAI, May 11, 2025 – Authorities in Tiruvannamalai have banned climbing Arunachala Hills and access to the Girivalam Path during the Chitra Pournami festival this Sunday and Monday to prevent accidents and protect wildlife. The decision comes in anticipation of 25-30 lakh visitors. The ban will be strictly enforced by forest and police personnel at seven vulnerable locations on the hills. The closure aims to safeguard the 5,000+ spotted deer inhabiting the reserve forest and prevent accidental forest fires. Extensive arrangements are in place to manage the large influx of pilgrims, including 20 temporary bus termini, 4,533 buses, 165 shuttle services, and a substantial police presence (5,197 personnel). Two field hospitals, 56 medical teams, and 50 ambulances are also on standby. A traffic advisory is in effect, with limited vehicle access to the town. Helpline numbers have been released for emergencies.
