**NEW DELHI/BEIJING** – China has voiced strong support for Pakistan following a renewed exchange of fire between Indian and Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Just hours after a short-lived ceasefire was broken by Pakistan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The timing of the Chinese statement, released shortly after reports of drone sightings and ceasefire violations by Pakistan, has raised questions. Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed the conversation, stating that Dar briefed Wang on the situation following a terror attack in Pahalgam, and that Wang praised Pakistan’s “restraint and responsible approach.” Wang reportedly reiterated China’s unwavering support as Pakistan’s “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partner.”
India swiftly condemned the Pakistani ceasefire violations, stating that its forces were responding appropriately and urging Pakistan to address the situation responsibly. The Indian statement highlighted repeated breaches of the earlier agreement between the Directors General of Military Operations of both countries. Dar also reportedly spoke with Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, to apprise him of the situation. The escalating tensions along the LoC follow a recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, further complicating the already fraught relationship between India and Pakistan.
